IN THE NEWS

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the first edition of Hibernia Atlantic’s monthly e-newsletter, “The Light Source.” We are proud to provide you a resource for the latest news on the cable transport industry and on Hibernia Atlantic. As we roll out our first edition, we are proud to report month over month growth in business.

Our latest clients include BTN, a global IP communications company, Colt Telecom, a European end-to-end communications service provider, Cogent Communications, the operator of 1 of the top 10 internet backbones in the world, Veroxity, a provider of custom-built data and IP optical networks and Zen Internet, one of the first ISPs in the UK. These companies are part of the ever-expanding global family of enterprise, ISPs, wholesale and carrier customers who rely on Hibernia for the fastest, most reliable way to communicate across the Atlantic Ocean.

As you may know, Hibernia provides Ethernet and optical level service, up to GigE and 10Gbps wavelengths, within 63 milliseconds roundtrip. And Hibernia’s US-built transport does not traverse traditional, congested oceanic cable routes, like the UK’s Cornwall District or the New York and New Jersey waterways. Instead, Hibernia has deployed the latest, fastest cable connections with the ability to deliver next generation services safely. In the coming months and years we look forward to servicing your global needs.

Without further adieu- here is our newsletter. Please enjoy.
Any suggestions on how we can improve this newsletter service for you, please email us at info@hiberniaatlantic.com.

Sincerely,
Bjarni Thorvardarson
CEO of Hibernia

In the summer of 1857, the first cable, all 2,500 nautical miles was finally constructed of gutta-percha, steel, copper and loaded on the U.S.S. Niagara and the H.M.S Agamemnon. These wooden hulls encased in iron ribs headed off after a magnificent send-off from the shore of Valentia Bay, Ireland. The send off was greater than the return…the attempt of 1857 failed and tested the patience of the Cable Cabinet as the cable snapped 200 miles from shore.

After replacing the cable in 1858 they tried again and a ferocious storm nearly sank the Agamemnon. The cable snapped yet again 100 miles from the mid–Atlantic starting point. The father of this famous cable stated,” my confidence is firm and my determination fixed.”

Soon after the first cable was complete, cheers could be heard around the world. New York City fireworks set City Hall on fire and Tiffany & Co. sold excess cable samples. But the cheering soon stopped when the signal failed a few weeks later. A Civil War ensued and only delayed the Trans-Atlantic project.

In July of 1865, the Great Eastern ship had her try at carrying the entire cable load. A freak accident ended her plight 600 miles from Newfoundland but soon after, she completed the task in July 1866. Only 139 short years ago.
